Clean Start Gaffney provides transitional housing to help homeless people who have had previous drug or alcohol addictions.  We know from experience that when you fix the housing problem first, it is easier to overcome many other obstacles.

We are in the process of renovating another building on 4th Street in Gaffney that will provide 5 additional bedrooms for transitional housing.  People can live there temporarily while they work and save the money required to get an apartment so they can live independently again.

From April – July 2023 the building’s demolition phase was completed, and new rafters and metal roofing were installed.  This was accomplished under the leadership of Pastor Sellars at Cherokee Gospel Tabernacle, using volunteer laborers from local churches working alongside several people who were themselves homeless.  The videos below show the demolition phase, and the roofing phase.  Just look at what can be accomplished when you work with the homeless. 75 days to go from a total mess to a finished roof! The still photos were taken from April – June 2023. (Any ads you see with the videos are placed by YouTube and not endorsed by us.)

In Fall 2024 we expect to resume work, thanks to the leadership of Pastor Bobby Morrow at Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church.  Pastor Morrow has recruited Tracy McDaniel (McDaniel Construction), as the General Contractor who will lead the renovation effort.  Pastor Sellars (Cherokee Gospel Tabernacle) and Pastor Morrow have also recruited other contractors to work on the project in their respective areas.  Peck Lester (ICR Plumbing Systems), Wayne Benton (Benton’s Electric), and Arthur Frady (Frady’s Heating and Air Conditioning) will all provide work, but each of these experts has a business to run, and will rely on volunteer labor to help complete their part of the 4th street project.

If you or your church would like to help by providing labor for this renovation, please contact the On-Site Coordinator, Rick Perkins, at (864) 279-4215.

If you or your church would like help financially with the 4th Street Project transitional housing renovations, please contact Cherokee Avenue Baptist at (864) 489-2568, or send checks payable to Cherokee Avenue Baptist, and in the memo field note “4th Street Project”.  The mailing address is: Cherokee Avenue Baptist, 805 Cherokee Avenue, Gaffney, SC 29340

Once renovations begin, we plan to post photos on a regular basis, so check back frequently.
